Hayward, originally known as "Haywards", is named for William Hayward, a worker from a New England shoe factory who came to California in 1849 during the California Gold Rush. After spending several frustrating years in the gold fields, Hayward returned to the Bay area. He squatted on Guillermo Castro's ranch near Palomares Canyon for a while until Castro invited him to his home to discuss his trepassing. Hayward soon bought 40 acres of Castro's land close to Castro's home, at present day A and Main Streets, which he used to establish a store and post office. He petitioned the US Postal Service to name the post office Hayward's, but because an office cannot be named after a living person, the name was changed to Haywood. Hayward is home to the main campus of California State University, East Bay, formerly known as California State University, Hayward.
